Doggang Writings

It’s A Colt!!

Finally our mare, Rose, had her foal.  His name is Steel as he is a light grey baby, with a star on her forehead and two white socks.

He was huge when he was born – almost 90 lbs. with good bone and straight legs.  He should mature to 16.2 hh.

Steel’s breeding is Warmblood (Thoroughbred Racing heritage and Percheron) and Palomino Morgan.  Steel has been sold with a foal training package.  His new owners will start their lessons the middle of May.  He will be moving to his new barn in the month of August.

Campylobacter

It  has come to my attention that Campylobacter is becoming prevalent in the world dog population.

Campylobacter is a bacterial infection that resides in the gut of humans, cats, dogs, sheep, cattle and etc.

50% of canine population has this bacteria in their system.  Outbreaks can be caused by drinking affected water, eating raw meat, stress, injury, in contact with affected carriers and the list goes on.

This bacteria is not completely understood, however, it is on the increase.  Puppies are most likely to show signs of hosting this bacteria as their little bodies have not built up sufficient immunities.

Symptoms of this outbreak are the following:  loose stools, minor to severe diarrhea, anal mucus discharge, loss of appetite, “butt-dragging”, etc.   In adult dogs, this outbreak will run its course and thus allowing the dog to build immunities to this host.  In puppies, do not allow these symptoms to persist for more than two days.

For treatment take a fresh stool sample to  your Vet for microscopic evaluation.  Your Vet will supply you with a prescription of antibiotics which will kill the bacteria colony within hours.

Remember to provide your friend with fresh water and to daily do your poop scoop due-diligence.

Dental Care For Your Miniature Schnauzer

I have completed a 3 month trial with the popular dental care product called “PlaqueOff”, by ProDen and had impressive results.

This product eliminates tarter and reduces plaque build up, resulting in less expensive dental bills for your beloved Miniature Schnauzer.

It is a seaweed product which comes in a dried, granular format.  You simply sprinkle a scoop (included in container) of PlaqueOff on your dog’s food.

I have incorporated this product into my daily feeding program.  It can be purchased from most pet shops and Amazon.com.

The jar looks like this:

You Are Your Dog’s Best Friend

You are your beloved Miniature Schnauzer’s best friend.  With such an honour to live up to, do not allow your dog to become over weight.  Obesity in Miniature Schnauzers will definitely shorten your best friend’s lifespan, as well as, obesity opens up health issue doors such as diabetes, pancreatitis, bladder stones – the list goes on and on.

So, remember, if you must give you dog treats throughout the day, make sure that you decrease their next feeding by the amount of treats that you dished out.

January 27th Snow Bliss Day!

What a blast that our Doggang and ourselves had up in our forest today!  Fresh snow and crisp air.  Some of our younger dogs had never seen or felt snow.  Look at these pictures – they tell the story of our romp up into the forest today!!

Farewell To Our Handsome Emerald

Emerald has found his new Mommy and Daddy and has been relocated up Island.  He will be learning how to swim and how to enjoy boating as he will be enjoying the ocean life with his new family.

We are always saddened to have one of our older puppies leave as we grow so attached to them – but we have been honoured to live with him for these past 5.5 months and we know that through his gentle and kind soul  he will bring love and respect to his new family.

Until we meet again Emerald – make us proud!  With plenty of love from your first Mommy and Daddy.

My Reward

After grooming Checkers, I took the Doggang up into the bush for our romping bonding session.  What a reward the bush was today – hush peacefulness, not a leaf or branch was stirring.   Simply the padding of the dogs feet along the forest trails and the musical song of a few bush frogs.  As we all enjoyed our romp, the more stilled we all became and once again we relaxed and enjoyed our group walk.

Here’s a picture of Checkers all decked out for the return of his Daddy.

Doggang Bootcamp!

Early November I will be scheduling Alpha training sessions for your Schnauzer.  Upon completion of the course, you will be also trained on how to become an Alpha leader.

The dog courses will be 10 days in duration whereas your friend will be alpha trained (or refreshed) in the areas of “0″ tolerance for barking, trail aggressiveness and positive socialization experiences.

Your dog will enjoy 18 hours of off leash and leashed outtings – in a group and in a singular basis.  You will receive 3 hours of “Train the Trainer” classes prior to taking your beloved Schnauzer home.

Only two dogs per training course are scheduled - ensuring a focused training environment for your dog.

You can take advantage of this training session if you want to drop your dog off for your holidays. The boarding costs are included in this 10 day course.

The 10 day training class will be $250.00 per dog (taxes included).

Lunch Time At Our Farm!

Adeeva’s and Mia’s puppies are growing fast!  They enjoy breakfast, lunch and supper and insist upon large quantities of warm, soft puppy chow!!

They are starting to get their puppy teeth and soon will be able to chew their chow.  Below is a picture of both of the litters sharing their lunch.
